Decoy Exhibit: Carvers by the Pair
January 14 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 9:30 am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, repeating until April 4, 2020
The D&R Greenway invites the public to enjoy stunning artistry in six duck species by seven world-class decoy carvers in its newest array from the Jay Vawter collection. This exhibit is particularly timely as the Cornell Ornithology Lab releases its dire study revealing the planet’s loss of 2.9 billion breeding billion birds since 1970. This collection of rarities was donated to the Land Trust in 2012. “Carvers by the Pair” displays Jay Vawter’s current loan of a spectacularly painted “old squaw” drake and hen, by Jim Schmiedlin. He joins legendary carvers Pat Godin, Ben Heinemann, Victor Peroyan, Jim Sprankle, Lem Ward, and Bob White. A preponderance of the birds in this collection has earned ribbons in competitions, nationally and internationally. Decoys have “‘migrated’ from hunters’ tools to fine art and well beyond,” declares ornithologist Charles Leck: “This collection is incredibly accurate.” The donor reveals his motive for the remarkable gift: “D&R Greenway preserves teem with these birds. Decoys serve to raise awareness about the urgency of conservation. Healthy land means healthy water”. This truly American art form may be seen during business hours of business days: Johnson Education Center, One Preservation Place, Princeton 08540 www.drgreenway.org 609-924-4646. A spring reception including Jay Vawter and legendary carvers will be announced.
