Record Store Day!
April 13 @ 10:00 am - 9:00 pmFree
Record Store Day celebrates the culture of the independently owned record store. On this day, hundreds of limited-edition titles are sold exclusively at stores like us here at Princeton Record Exchange.
We know you know by now about the remarkable resurgence of vinyl in the last few years. While many records are available online or in “big box” stores, the main attraction of Record Store Day is a huge slate of titles that cannot be found anywhere but at participating independent brick-and-mortar stores. At last count, there are over 400 exclusive and early release titles being issued this year.
1) What’s coming out?
The “official” Record Store Day list has been released. See http://recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases for the titles and info on what makes them special.
2) Are you going to have “that record I’m looking for” in stock?
Sorry, we don’t know. We order a LOT of product, based on what we think we can sell, past history with artists, “cool” factor, etc. However, many of these titles have very limited production runs, so they are allocated by the distributors to stores around the country. How do they decide who gets what? Beats us. The upshot is that we get a sizable portion of what we order, but definitely not all of it. Still, on the last few Record Store Days we have had over 1,500 pieces for sale!
3) Can I reserve/prepay for a Record Store Day item?
No, sorry, we are a Record Store Day “pledged” store, and as such promise not to do such things. We sell in-store first come, first served on that day and not before.
The store opens at 10:00 am., but people often line up much earlier than that to maximize their chances of getting the rarer titles. (Note: the line is for Record Store Day product only. Everyone is welcome to shop the rest of the store without waiting.). The special product is in one area of the store. We let several shop at a time, then let the next batch in as space opens up. Depending on where you end up in line, it can take an hour or more to reach the front.
Please be aware that you may not find every item on your list. We will be limiting purchases to one of each title per customer, but even so, the highly sought-after pieces go quickly. However, because we’ll have so much product in stock, no matter when you come, we promise they’ll be lots to pick from.
We hope you’ll join us this year and celebrate the joys of a real brick-and mortar record store!
