Everyone is familiar with Washington’s crossing of the Delaware on December 25, 1776. Immortalized with the iconic Emanuel Leutze painting, the capture of the Hessian Garrison set into motion a series of events that would change the course of history. Many factors contributed to the success of the Ten Crucial Days of the American Revolution. But Thomas Paine’s phrase, “…the times that tried men’s souls,” was written before the Ten Crucial Days. Before the battles, before the crossing, events would occur that not only contributed to the success of the Ten Crucial Days but were, in fact, responsible for the campaign’s success. To truly understand how Washington and his men gained victory in Trenton, one must know what happened in
Burlington County in the weeks leading up to Christmas 1776. In his rousing narrative, Washington Crossing Historical Park’s Military Historian, Colin Zimmerman, will explain these events. A question-and-answer period will follow Colin’s talk.
Speaker: Colin Zimmerman obtained a master’s degree in military history from Norwich University and is currently working on a Ph.D. specializing in the American Revolution through Liberty University. Mr. Zimmerman currently serves as the Military Historian for Washington Crossing Historic Park. He is a devoted husband and father of three and resides in Southern New Jersey.
