The Princeton Festival presents Puccini’s Madama Butterfly
June 16 @ 7:30 pm - 10:15 pm$45 – $150
Puccini’s tuneful, heart-wrenching, and perennially popular masterpiece, Madama Butterfly, tells the tale of a young Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio-San (the titular Butterfly), who falls for Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Japan. She marries him in defiance of her family’s disapproval, only to be abandoned when Pinkerton returns to America. Love, longing, betrayal, and sacrifice pulse through some of Puccini’s most expressive music, including the haunting Humming Chorus and Butterfly’s breathtaking “Un bel dì (One fine day).” Equally appealing to the new and curious as well as the seasoned opera aficionado, Madama Butterfly is sure to grip your heart.
A free “Meet the Artists” opening night reception follows the June 16 performance. The Princeton Festival’s production of Madama Butterfly continues with 3:00 pm matinee performances on June 24 and July 1.
Tickets are now on sale for the 2018 Princeton Festival, a landmark program of breathtaking opera, musical theater, jazz, chamber music, lectures, and more. Visit princetonfestival.org for festival information and news.
