SUMMARY:Free Carillon Concert at Princeton University
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating more than 30 years of community recitals\, the Princeton University Carillon continues to host free Sunday concerts for the public. Performances begin at 1 p.m. and are held rain or shine at the Graduate College\, 88 College Road West. \nThe carillon\, housed in Cleveland Tower\, is a musical instrument made up of at least 23 stationary bells with clappers that strike their rims to produce music. It is played manually from a console\, where the carillonneur uses both hands and feet to operate batons and pedals connected to the clappers through a mechanical system. There is no electronic assistance; all sound and expression come directly from the performer. \nBecause the music carries over long distances\, the carillon serves as a community instrument that can be heard across much of Princeton. \nDedicated in 1927 as a memorial to the Class of 1892\, Princeton’s carillon includes 67 bronze bells cast in England\, France and the Netherlands. The largest bell weighs 12\,880 pounds. The carillon program is part of University Chapel Music and is supported by an endowment established by the Class of 1892. \nFor more information\, call 609-258-7989. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Flying to the Moon: A View from the Apollo Guidance Computer
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Planetarium for a free talk with Frank O’Brien\, a spaceflight historian and JPL Solar System Ambassador. A flight to the moon seems impossibly complex\, especially given the technological state of the art in the 1960’s. While the details are indeed formidable\, the concepts are surprisingly easy to understand. Three key components were used in the Apollo spacecraft to voyage from the Earth to the Moon and back home again: the computer\, the guidance platform and the sextant. Mr. O’Brien will walk us through how the astronauts used these systems\, each of which builds on another to solve the problem of navigating to our nearest celestial neighbor. As a special bonus\, Frank will describe how to land on the Moon! Reserve your seat with this link: https://forms.office.com/g/0vJ0yXMrBC

SUMMARY:Morven's Curator Corner: The Joseph Hewes Miniature
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for a free virtual lunchtime talk with the museum’s curatorial team. \nCuratorial Assistant Emily Marturano will discuss the Joseph Hewes miniature\, currently on view in Five Independent Souls: The Signers from New Jersey. \nThis watercolor miniature by famed artist Charles Willson Peale is adorned in garnets and is the only known likeness of Hewes\, a Signer of the Declaration and a founder of the American Navy. Commissioned as a gift\, it helps shed light on personal connections\, sentiments towards independence\, and illness in the months leading up to July 1776. \nPictured: Miniature of Joseph Hewes (1730–1779)\, 1776. Charles Willson Peale (1741–1827). Watercolor on ivory. Loan courtesy of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum.

SUMMARY:Is Jesus' Healing Work a Model for Today?
DESCRIPTION:Alexandre Fischer\, Christian Science practitioner and lecturer will present his talk\, Is Jesus’ Healing Work a Model for Today? Alexandre will discuss Christian Science and how it explains the practical application of Jesus’ teachings in daily life\, for anyone\, including physical healing. He explores examples from the Bible and shares personal testimonies of healing\, all pointing to the fact that God is not far off\, but here and now. We are all capable of understanding this for ourselves\, of genuinely feeling infinite\, ever-present Love\, which is God\, and helping others do the same.

SUMMARY:Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art
DESCRIPTION:Bats\, gourds\, peaches\, ribbons\, and monkeys on horses: these images are frequently (and creatively) depicted in Chinese art — but what do they mean? Just as the Chinese language is an exquisite conduit for rebuses (visual puns) and symbolism\, motifs that appear in Chinese art often represent wishes for good fortune. Join us as we decipher hidden messages of prosperity\, health\, and happiness found in traditional Chinese art using selected objects from the Asian Art Museum’s collection. Please visit events.mcl.org to register to receive the link to the program.
