SUMMARY:Stewarding with Stories: Sustaining Fish and Community on Lewis Island
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for shad season\, join us on May 28th at 7:30 PM via Zoom for an illustrated lecture by folklorist Dr. Charlie Groth.  Dr. Groth invites you to step into the world of the Lewis Fishery — the last remaining commercial traditional haul-seine fishery on the non-tidal Delaware River.  After a brief introduction to the haul seine method and fishery history\, Groth will share how various story types at the fishery interweave to support community and natural resources. \nDon’t miss this rare window into a living piece of American folklife\, where tradition\, storytelling\, and the seasons still move together.  \nLambertville resident\, Charlie Groth\, PhD\, began studying the Lewis Fishery in 1996 as part of her folklore and folklife doctoral studies and has continued working as a fishery crew member ever since. She is the author of Another Haul: Narrative Stewardship and Cultural Sustainability at the Lewis Family Fishery and a professor at Bucks County Community College. \nFree registration: https://tinyurl.com/5d2wjyr9 \nThe Delaware River Greenway Partnership (DRGP) periodically sponsors lectures about different aspects of the Delaware River’s cultural\, recreational\, and natural heritage. An environmental nonprofit\, DRGP supports the Delaware River Scenic Byway\, the Lower Delaware Wild & Scenic River\, the Delaware River Water Trail\, and the Delaware River Heritage Trail.

SUMMARY:Art Talk: Three Visionary Women | Three Great Museums
DESCRIPTION:What does a woman do when she is born to great privilege\, has enormous wealth\, loves to travel to faraway places\, and has a healthy dose of intellectual curiosity? Well\, she collects art of course! And then she must envision a place to exhibit her passion. This talk will examine the lives of three remarkable women who defined society’s expectations: Isabella Stewart Gardner\, Helene Kröller-Müller\, and Peggy Guggenheim. We will trace the steps each took to amass three of the most important collections of art in the world and how they built the museums to hold their treasures. And we will see some amazing paintings\, too! Come along on the journey! \nSponsored by the Friends of the Pennington Public Library and the Hopewell Valley Arts Council. Registar via the Zoom link below.  \nAbout Our Presenter: Janet Mandel taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years\, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Maplewood\, where she taught English\, art history\, and World Languages and Cultures. Now retired\, Janet presents illustrated talks on a variety of art history topics at adult schools\, libraries\, museums\, senior centers\, community centers\, and similar venues.

SUMMARY:The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:When we think of the American Revolution\, we often imagine a local struggle between thirteen colonies and the British Crown. Historian and author Richard Bell challenges that familiar story\, revealing the Revolution as a global war that reshaped lives and power across six continents. From the Caribbean and Canada to Africa\, India\, and South America\, the conflict sparked migration\, rebellion\, and transformation far beyond North America. This program re-examines the Revolutionary War as a complex\, high-stakes global event whose consequences continue to resonate in the modern world. Please visit events.mcl.org to register to receive the link to the program. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Illusions of Understanding in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:Technologies such as the internet and large language models offer unprecedented access to information. But with that access comes a cognitive challenge: accurately monitoring what we truly understand “inside” our minds\, versus merely have access to beyond them. In this talk\, Professor Lombrozo discusses evidence for how technology can foster illusions of understanding—cases where we mistake others’ knowledge for our own. \nPlease join us for a talk by Tania Lombrozo\, Arthur W. Marks ’19 Professor of Psychology. Moderated by Michael Gordin\, Dean of the College and Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History. \nRegistration is appreciated\, but not required: https://forms.gle/9K3LkLiNTSbTqNDo8

SUMMARY:Free Carillon Concert at Princeton University
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating more than 30 years of community recitals\, the Princeton University Carillon continues to host free Sunday concerts for the public. Performances begin at 1 p.m. and are held rain or shine at the Graduate College\, 88 College Road West. \nThe carillon\, housed in Cleveland Tower\, is a musical instrument made up of at least 23 stationary bells with clappers that strike their rims to produce music. It is played manually from a console\, where the carillonneur uses both hands and feet to operate batons and pedals connected to the clappers through a mechanical system. There is no electronic assistance; all sound and expression come directly from the performer. \nBecause the music carries over long distances\, the carillon serves as a community instrument that can be heard across much of Princeton. \nDedicated in 1927 as a memorial to the Class of 1892\, Princeton’s carillon includes 67 bronze bells cast in England\, France and the Netherlands. The largest bell weighs 12\,880 pounds. The carillon program is part of University Chapel Music and is supported by an endowment established by the Class of 1892. \nFor more information\, call 609-258-7989. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
