SUMMARY:Grand Homes & Gardens: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden
DESCRIPTION:Blending history\, architecture\, and horticulture\, this year’s Grand Homes & Gardens speaker series\, Freedom at Home: Telling the Full Story of America’s Founding Homes and Gardens\, showcases the estates of signers of the Declaration of Independence\, telling the stories of the people who lived and worked in these grand spaces.  \nOn March 26\, Morven welcomes Peter Hatch (Gardener\, Historian\, and Emeritus Director of Gardens and Grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation) for an illustrated presentation on Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden. The Monticello vegetable garden\, a 1\,000-foot-long terrace\, grew new and unusual edible plants from around the world. Jefferson was a strong believer in a vegetable diet\, and this revolutionary garden inspired a revolutionary cuisine in the kitchen at Monticello. Much of the work constructing\, cultivating\, and maintaining the gardens would have fallen to enslaved labor. Today\, these gardens have been mostly restored to the early nineteenth century.  \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThe final program in the series takes place on April 16.

SUMMARY:Now is the Time: Artists Go to Work - Toni Morrison’s Atelier and the Importance of Artistic Convening and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:“This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair.” – Toni Morrison. Princeton Professor\, Emeritus\, Toni Morrison taught that the measure of a nation is not in its monuments but in the stories it has the courage to face. To reckon with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is to reckon with freedom declared in words long before it was lived in practice\, and to grapple with a history that has constantly faced erasure. A convening of artists\, thinkers\, and communities will collectively reflect on the unfinished work this anniversary makes so strikingly apparent. The Lewis Center’s Princeton Atelier and The Collaboratorium for Radical Aesthetics joins The Toni Morrison Foundation and the Park Avenue Armory to present a panel discussion reflecting on the power of artistic convening and collaboration as part of the on-going legacy of the Atelier’s founder\, Toni Morrison. Moderated by Atelier Director Tina Campt and former Program Director for Arts and Culture at The Mellon Foundation Emil Kang\, speakers include curator and choreographer Rashida Bumbray; Grammy Award-winning drummer\, composer\, producer\, and educator Terri Lyne Carrington; founder of Kindred on the Rock\, writer\, and activist Staceyann Chin; MacArthur Fellow and movement artist Okwui Okpokwasili and her co-founder of Sweat Variant\, director\, composer and designer Peter Born; and Grammy Award-winning bassist\, composer\, and educator Esperanza Spalding. \nAccessibility: The Wallace Theater is an accessible venue. Guests in need of access accommodations are asked to contact the Lewis Center at LewisCenter@princeton.edu at least one week prior to the event date.

SUMMARY:God Remembers Setsi by Nadine Allache’26
DESCRIPTION:Date/Times: March 27 at 8p.m. March 28 at 11:30a.m. \nWhat is the opposite of a lie? Is it the truth? Or is it remembering why you told the lie in the first place? Princeton senior Nadine Allache’s God Remembers Setsi refuses the authority of the written record and instead trusts repetition\, breath\, and critical fabulation as sites of historical survival. The play is inspired by the erased oral histories of Amazigh women\, the indigenous people of North Africa. The work emerges from the recognition that what is held only in memory is always at risk of disappearance\, and yet what is unrecorded is not unwitnessed. In the play\, Setsi\, a blinded freedom fighter\, prepares for a ceremony honoring her courage. Her granddaughter unexpectedly appears with a miracle that could restore her sight. But there’s one condition: Setsi must admit the truth about the tragic day that everything went dark. Allache\, who is also directing\, received an Alex Adam ’07 Award grant from the Lewis Center last summer to support both the research and writing of the play\, recording\, transcribing\, and adapting her grandmother’s oral histories in Taqbaylit while spending ten weeks in New York City learning from and engaging with the artistic cultures of Amazigh and immigrant communities\, whose histories and lived experiences have too often existed only in memory. \nAdmission: Free and open to the public\, however tickets are required\, available online at tickets.princeton.edu. \nAccessibility: The Drapkin Studio is an accessible venue. Guests in need of access accommodations are asked to contact the Lewis Center at LewisCenter@princeton.edu at least one week prior to the event date.

SUMMARY:Art Pop-up: Recent Works by Joe Kossow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-day art pop-up showcasing the recent works of Joe Kossow.\n\nArtist statement:\nThe source material for these works are photographs that date from 1860-1940.  I spend a long time editing the photos (changing their scale\, eliminating certain elements\, working with aspects of dark and light) until I have recomposed the works.  I draw as accurately from the edited source material as I can\, then take liberties with the brushwork to emphasize elements of light and dark as needed.  I love the imaginative narrative inherent in these drawings of wrecked ships\, old harbors\, town life\, people praying or people at a café.   \nAbout the artist:\nJoe Kossow received a Master in Fine Arts degree from The American University in Washington\, DC in 1982\, where he studied with Ben Summerford\, Robert D’Arista and Jack Boul. In 1983 he co-founded the Washington Studio School with Lee Newman\, Carlton Fletcher\, Jack Boul\, Susan Yanero\, David Holt\, Jo Weiss\, and Katie Murray. Joe taught at the Washington Studio School and local Washington area colleges for 8 years. He was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields prize in 1983. His work has been shown in the DC area\, Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, and in Paris and Nancy\, France.  He lives and works in Princeton\, New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Pratima: Singularity and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:A live Indian Classical dance performance.\n\n\n\nOur Winter 2026 Artist-in-Residence Nisha Pradeep’s residency will culminate in a live performance\, bridging ancient tradition and futuristic inquiry through the accessible and emotive language of dance. A guided discussion with the audience will follow. \nThis dance contrasts humanity’s organic\, multi-millennial evolution with the rapid\, exponential growth of synthetic intelligence. Through expressive storytelling (Abhinaya) and intricate rhythmic structures\, the work investigates the philosophical threshold known as the Singularity — the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human capability — and the emergence of superintelligence. At its core\, the project asks a timely and essential question: what does it mean to be human in an era of sentient machines? \nAbout the Artist\nTrained in Indian classical artforms\, Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattom\, Nisha Pradeep started her journey at Nataraj Kalamandir\, India under the tutelage of Guru Rajalakshmi Surendran. Nisha has a Masters of Fine Arts in Bharathanatyam from Annamalai University. Currently she is taking advanced training in nattuvangam from the Sri Swaminathan Pillai of the Thanjavur Bani style of Bharathanatyam.

SUMMARY:Screening of Mundane Histories with Filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong
DESCRIPTION:In the third film of a spring series\, Associate Professor of Visual Arts Nicolás Pereda presents a screening of Mundane Histories. This first full-length 2009 feature by the Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong tells the story of a bitter young man who is paralyzed from the waist down after an accident and has been appointed a new nurse. Their relationship is cool\, and his authoritarian father\, who seldom shows his face\, is also not a model of warmth and understanding. In long\, neutral scenes separated by hard cuts\, the contours emerge of a restrained psychological drama in which the young man’s cynicism slowly makes way for a renewed\, cautious attempt to explore life. SUMMARY:Pop-Up Choir Princeton
DESCRIPTION:The choir you didn’t know you needed.\n\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is an all-ages community singing experience where families\, neighbors\, and music-lovers come together to sing pop songs in harmony — no auditions\, no pressure\, just joy. \n\nKids and parents sing side-by-side\nAdults who “used to sing” feel safe to try again\nFirst-time singers get to experience the magic of choir\n\nSing shortened versions of well-loved pop songs arranged with easy-to-follow harmonies. \nRather than being divided by age or gender\, singers choose the range that feels best for their voice: Low\, Middle\, or High. \nFamilies sit together and work as a team — either choosing to all sing the same part or challenge each other to sing in harmony. \nThere will also be moments where singers can volunteer to sing a short line of the melody on their own. If you feel inspired\, just raise your hand when prompted and you can try the melody while the choir supports you. \n\nA screen-free singing experience:\n\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is intentionally phone-free and screen-free. Instead of staring at iPads or projectors\, everyone receives a simple lyric sheet and learns the music together by ear and by voice — the way humans have always sung. This keeps the focus on listening\, connection\, and the shared energy of singing in the same room.

SUMMARY:Getting Graphic with History: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey with author Amy Hollander on April 9th at 7:30 PM to explore her recent graphic novel\, Low Bridge\, Everybody Down\, which shares the real-life experiences of Jimmy Brown\, a black canal boat captain on the Delaware and Lehigh Canal in the early 1900s. Learn how Hollander crafted the story by combining Jimmy’s oral histories within the framework of local\, regional\, and national events\, and how she interwove her narrative with the vibrant art of Will Rosado to create a dynamic interplay of word and image — one that will engage the next generation of young readers with the diverse history of the Delaware and Lehigh Canal system. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: \nAmy Hollander is a lifelong storyteller with 20 years of experience as an educator and a museum professional in the tri-state area.
