SUMMARY:ART OF Sugar: Science\, Sculpture & Social Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating\, part-lecture\, part-live demonstration with edible artist Linda Khachadurian\, where art\, science\, and social impact collide. Linda will introduce participants to the basics of isomalt\, a sugar derived from sugar beets\, and explain why this glossy\, durable material has become her medium of choice for sculptural work. \nWatch as a sugar sculpture comes to life through live demonstrations of casting\, pulling\, coloring\, and blowtorching techniques\, resulting in a striking vertical piece assembled in real time. Along the way\, Linda will share examples of her work exhibited in galleries and discuss how she uses edible art to raise awareness around social causes\, offering inspiration for how creativity can be a powerful tool for meaningful change. The session will conclude with time for questions and a close-up look at the tools and techniques behind this unique art form.

SUMMARY:The Comeuppance by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:In the fall of 2022\, on the eve of their 20th high school reunion\, a self-proclaimed “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” reconnects on the porch of a house in their old neighborhood in Prince George’s County\, Maryland. Reminiscing about their high school years and recent pasts (including Covid-19\, 9/11\, and Columbine) and fueled by drinking and smoking pot\, the friends discover competing\, recollected versions of their teenage years and find themselves facing a reckoning with the memories of who they were\, and are\, as an undeniable element of the future viscerally looms before them. This hauntingly surreal play by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning Princeton alum Branden Jacobs-Jenkins ’06 (An Octoroon\, Appropriate\, Gloria) garnered a New York Times Critic’s Pick and Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. \nDirected by Princeton Lecturer in Theater Vivia Font \nAccessibility: The Berlind Theatre is an accessible venue with an assistive listening system. SUMMARY:Screening of Mundane Histories with Filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong
DESCRIPTION:In the third film of a spring series\, Associate Professor of Visual Arts Nicolás Pereda presents a screening of Mundane Histories. This first full-length 2009 feature by the Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong tells the story of a bitter young man who is paralyzed from the waist down after an accident and has been appointed a new nurse. Their relationship is cool\, and his authoritarian father\, who seldom shows his face\, is also not a model of warmth and understanding. In long\, neutral scenes separated by hard cuts\, the contours emerge of a restrained psychological drama in which the young man’s cynicism slowly makes way for a renewed\, cautious attempt to explore life. Q&A with the filmmaker follows the screening \nAccessibility: The Stewart Theater is an accessible venue. Guests in need of access accommodations are invited to contact the Lewis Center at least one week in advance at LewisCenter@princeton.edu

SUMMARY:Getting Graphic with History: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey with author Amy Hollander on April 9th at 7:30 PM to explore her recent graphic novel\, Low Bridge\, Everybody Down\, which shares the real-life experiences of Jimmy Brown\, a black canal boat captain on the Delaware and Lehigh Canal in the early 1900s. Learn how Hollander crafted the story by combining Jimmy’s oral histories within the framework of local\, regional\, and national events\, and how she interwove her narrative with the vibrant art of Will Rosado to create a dynamic interplay of word and image — one that will engage the next generation of young readers with the diverse history of the Delaware and Lehigh Canal system. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: \nAmy Hollander is a lifelong storyteller with 20 years of experience as an educator and a museum professional in the tri-state area. For years\, Hollander has specialized in developing living history programming for local school districts. These programs introduced students to the lives and struggles of everyday people in history. \nIn 2017\, Hollander established Cloud Mill LLC to help museums navigate 21st-century challenges. Hollander encourages community-forward planning in her projects and has a successful record of developing and delivering powerful exhibits and engaging programs that bring underserved narratives to the forefront. Currently\, Amy is the Historic Resources Manager for the Parks and Recreation Department for the County of Bucks. In this capacity\, she authors a blog\, Bucks Bygone Byways\, that highlights the lives of everyday people\, places\, and objects from the past. \nWorking on Jimmy Brown’s life story has been an honor for the author. From the first listen of Jimmy’s recorded memories. Hollander was captivated by both Jimmy’s positive attitude\, despite the trials he endured\, and his determination to make a better life for himself against all odds. \n  \nFree Registration: https://shorturl.at/WVFBY \n  \nAbout DRGP \nThe Delaware River Greenway Partnership (DRGP) sponsors lectures about different aspects of the Delaware River’s cultural\, recreational\, and natural heritage. SUMMARY:Grand Homes & Gardens: Middleton Place
DESCRIPTION:Blending history\, architecture\, and horticulture\, this year’s Grand Homes & Gardens speaker series\, Freedom at Home: Telling the Full Story of America’s Founding Homes and Gardens\, showcases the estates of signers of the Declaration of Independence\, telling the stories of the people who lived and worked in these grand spaces.  \nOn April 16\, Morven welcomes Brandon Stone (Director Research and Preservation) for an illustrated presentation on Middleton Place in Charleston\, SC\, the primary home of Declaration signer Arthur Middleton. More than 2\,800 men\, women\, and children were enslaved by the Middleton family from 1738 to 1865. The estate was heavily impacted by the Civil War when Union troops razed most of the property. The plantation’s extensive and transformative gardens\, established in the 1740s\, were awarded the Garden Club of America’s highest honor\, the Bulkley Medal\, in 1941. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThe 2026 Grand Homes & Gardens speaker series is sponsored by Bryn Mawr Trust. This program is sponsored by Corcoran Sawyer Smith.
