Ellen Regan Kerney of Lawrenceville dies at 89

Ellen Regan Kerney, a longtime Princeton-area resident known for her love of travel, reading and golden retrievers, died at her home in Lawrenceville on May 30. She was 89.

Born in Trenton on June 12, 1935, Kerney was the daughter of Elsie R. Kerney and James Kerney Jr. She grew up in Trenton and Princeton and received her early education at Miss Fine’s School in Princeton and the Convent of the Holy Child in Suffern, New York.

She later attended Bennett College in Millbrook, New York, and continued her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Kerney lived for many years in New York City and traveled extensively, particularly in Europe. She returned to Princeton in 1971, where she remained active in the community. An avid tennis player, she also enjoyed reading and was devoted to her golden retrievers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Kerney Levenstein.

Survivors include her brothers, J. Regan Kerney and T. Lincoln Kerney, both of Lawrenceville; two nieces, Cairistin Mills of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Ruth McDaniels of Greenbrae, California; as well as three great-nieces and two great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at St. Paul’s Church, 216 Nassau St., Princeton. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Princeton. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton.
