Princeton Public Library’s September lineup features award-winning authors, concerts and cultural festivals

From Pulitzer finalists and young adult authors to local musicians and dance lessons under the stars, the Princeton Public Library has filled September with a wide range of cultural and community programming.

The library’s author talks will feature a slate of nationally known writers. On Sept. 10, Dan-el Padilla Peralta, joined by Kate Meng Brassel, opens the month with a Library Live at Labyrinth event at Labyrinth Books to discuss his new book, Classicism and Other Phobias.

The following evening, historian Peniel E. Joseph will join Laurence Ralph to talk about his latest book, Freedom Season: How 1963 Transformed America’s Civil Rights Revolution.

Other highlights include Ken Jaworowski on Sept. 14 at a “Book Brunch” event featuring coffee and pastries; Daniel Pollack-Pelzner on Sept. 15 with Brian Herrera to discuss his biography of Lin-Manuel Miranda; and Princeton University professor Michael Gordin on Sept. 16, presenting On the Fringe: When Science Meets Pseudoscience, this year’s Pre-read selection for the incoming Princeton Class of 2029.

Later in the month, Henry Grabar will appear Sept. 18 to talk about Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World, while YA author Abigail Hing Wen will introduce her new middle grade novel, The Vale, on Sept. 19. Allison Daminger will discuss her book, What’s on Her Mind: The Mental Workload of Family Life, on Sept. 23, followed by novelist Jane Hamilton in conversation with Laura Spence-Ash on Sept. 25. The month closes with Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia!, and Pulitzer-winning poet Jericho Brown on Sept. 30.

Beyond author talks, the library is staging concerts, films and cultural celebrations. “Listen Local: The Professors” will perform on Hinds Plaza on Sept. 14. The library will also host two “Downton Abbey” screenings — the first film on Sept. 4 and A New Era on Sept. 11.

Community and cultural programs include a continuing conversation on race (Sept. 8), a community cultural exchange on Sept. 12 as part of National Welcoming Week, and the annual Festival Cultural Latino on Sept. 28 in both Hinds Plaza and Palmer Square. Dancing Under the Stars returns Sept. 12 and Sept. 26.

Workshops for writers run throughout the month, along with book groups including the Black Voices Book Group (Sept. 11) and the Fiction Book Group (Sept. 11). A newcomers evening on Sept. 17 will welcome residents new to Princeton.

The library will also continue its slate of technology workshops, covering topics such as Google Calendar, iCloud, Google Slides, Adobe After Effects, and a session titled “Demystifying AI” on Sept. 18.
