Man critically injured after car strikes tractor-trailer on Route 1 in West Windsor
An 80-year-old Levittown, Pa., man was hospitalized with multiple life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning after his car struck a tractor-trailer on U.S. Route 1 South, according to West Windsor Township police.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:52 a.m. on March 18 near Fisher Place. Police said a 2024 Kia traveling south struck the center median several times before drifting into the center lane and hitting the rear of a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer’s driver, a 38-year-old man from Bogota, N.J., told police he felt a slight impact and looked in his mirrors to find the Kia at rest in the left lane. He was not reported injured.
Emergency responders arrived after the department’s communications center received multiple 911 calls. Paramedics found the Kia’s driver unresponsive and immediately began CPR. Officers helped EMS personnel remove him from the vehicle while life-saving measures continued. He was transported to Capital Health Regional – Fuld Campus, where he was admitted with multiple life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates the driver may have experienced a medical episode and lost consciousness before the crash. The registered owner of the Kia provided officers with dash camera footage of the incident.
The identities of both drivers are being withheld pending investigation. The crash remains under investigation by the West Windsor Police Traffic Division.
