South Brunswick issues township-wide boil water advisory after two water main breaks

Officials in South Brunswick have issued a township-wide boil water advisory after two water main breaks on Tuesday morning, including a major break along Route 1 near the Dow Jones complex.

The advisory applies to all residents and businesses across the township, including Dayton, Deans, Kendall Park, Kingston, and Monmouth Junction.

At about 9 a.m. Tuesday, township officials said crews were working on emergency repairs to a water main break on Route 1 near Dow Jones that was expected to take six to eight hours. Officials later said a second water main break elsewhere in the township was also being repaired.

Because water main breaks can lead to a drop in system pressure. A boil water advisory is commonly issued after a main break because reduced pressure can allow bacteria or other microorganisms to enter the distribution system.

“A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists,” the township said in its alert. “As a precaution, we are implementing a system-wide boil water advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.”

Residents are being instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow it to cool before using it for:

  • drinking
  • cooking
  • making ice
  • brushing teeth
  • washing fruits and vegetables
  • preparing baby formula
  • washing dishes
  • giving water to pets

Officials also advised residents to avoid swallowing tap water while showering or bathing and to discard any ice, beverages, or uncooked food prepared with tap water on Tuesday.

The township said the advisory will remain in place until repairs are completed and water testing confirms that the system is safe. An alert will be sent out when water is safe to drink.

“As soon as repairs are made, the Water Department will conduct tests to ensure the water is safe to drink again,” officials said.

The township’s water division said residents with questions can call 732-329-4000 ext. 7226 or 7270.
