Illusions of Understanding in the Age of AI

May 19 • 10:30 am

Illusions of Understanding May 19 scaled

Technologies such as the internet and large language models offer unprecedented access to information. But with that access comes a cognitive challenge: accurately monitoring what we truly understand “inside” our minds, versus merely have access to beyond them. In this talk, Professor Lombrozo discusses evidence for how technology can foster illusions of understanding—cases where we mistake others’ knowledge for our own.

Please join us for a talk by Tania Lombrozo, Arthur W. Marks ’19 Professor of Psychology. Moderated by Michael Gordin, Dean of the College and Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History.
