Princeton Township Police to Offer Youth Academy

Students can learn what it is like to be a police officer by attending the Princeton Township Police Youth Academy this summer.

The five-day academy will include classroom activities, hands-on techniques, and police demonstrations. Topics covered will include car accident investigations, crime scene investigations, arrest procedures, motor vehicle stops, building searches, fire safety, basic first aid and more. Police say the program will not only inform students about police work, but also  help build self confidence and discipline in the students who participate.

“It is our hope that this program will not only educate the participant but that it will create a
stronger bond between the police officers and the youth of our community,” said Det. Ben Gering in a release about the program.

The academy, which will be held Aug. 22-26 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is open to students who attend public or privates in the township and borough who will be entering the 6th-8th grade this fall.

Registration is limited to 20 students. A registration form must be completed and returned to Det. Ben Gering at the township police department by July 29.

Participants will be given a t-shirt which they will need to wear to the academy. They will need to bring a bag lunch Monday-Thursday, but lunch will be provided on Friday for the final day. The last day of the academy also includes a graduation ceremony that friends and family are invited to attend.

Registration forms can be picked up at the township police department at 1 Valley Road. For further information call Det. Ben Gering at (609) 921-2100, ext. 1840 or e-mail bgeringATprinceton-township.nj.us.
