Driver Survives Plaza Crash
The elderly driver who crashed into the Spring Street Parking Garage yesterday afternoon is recovering, but more information about what caused the crash and whether it was health related probably will not be available until tomorrow, police said.
The man came barreling down Hulfish Street in his white Cadillac just after 5 p.m. yesterday, hopped the curb onto the library plaza and crashed into the Spring Street Parking Garage.
While it was unclear whether he suffered a health condition that resulted in the crash, of if there was a car malfunction, one source who was at the scene said it appeared that the man had a stroke just before the crash.
Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the vehicle by removing the roof and he was taken to the hospital. No one else was injured.
