The American Planning Association has announced that Nassau Street in downtown Princeton has earned the “People’s Choice” designation as one of the “Great Places in America” in 2016.

“Nassau Street is certainly a people’s choice as a go-to destination. Princeton is most fortunate to receive this national recognition,” said Lee Solow,  the town’s planning director.

For the third year in the row, the association asked the public to nominate a favorite public space, neighborhood, or street. Suggestions were collected throughout October via social media outlets using the hashtag #APAGreatPlaces. Five finalists were selected out of almost a hundred suggestions that were received. The public could then vote for a favorite through the association’s website.

Nassau Street edged out the Millwork District in Dubuque, Iowa as this year’s “People’s Choice” designation. The three other finalists were Sims Park in New Port Richey, Florida; the Pearl District in San Antonio, Texas; and The Whiteaker Neighborhood in Eugene, Oregon.

Since “Great Places in America” was launched in 2007, the American Planning Association has designated 260 neighborhoods, streets and public spaces as great places. Winners are announced annually and are selected for having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, and community involvement.
