Man Dead, Teen in Critical Condition After Route 1 Crash in South Brunswick

A 29-year-old man from Georgia was killed after a crash on Route 1 at the intersection of Raymond Road that took place just before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

John Jermill Williams, 29, of Hampton, Georgia was crossing Route 1 at the northbound Raymond Road jughandle in his 2016 Ford Transit Connect when he was struck by a 2005 Volvo tractor trailer that was headed north on Rout 1, police said. The tractor trailer was being driven by Nohemi Farfan, 45, of Baytown, Texas.

The collision caused the front seat passenger in Williams’ vehicle to be ejected onto the roadway, police said. That passenger, a 17-year-old male from Philadelphia, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He is in critical condition.

Williams was taken to University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro and pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:44 p.m. The tractor trailer driver, Farfan, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for her injuries. She was treated and released.

The collision forced the tractor trailer to come to rest on top of the divider, straddling both the northbound and southbound lanes. Route 1 was closed in both directions from Route 522 to Ridge Road from 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m., police said.

EMS units from the Kendall Park, Monmouth Junction, and Plainsboro First Aid Squads, along with paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital were at the scene. The Kingston Fire Department and New Jersey Department of Transportation also responded to the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed, police said. Investigators have spoken to some witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Officer Jesse Blake at (732) 329-4000 ext. 7472 or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Don Heck (732) 745-3300.
