Pedestrian and driver die in two car crashes in Lawrence Friday night and early Saturday
A pedestrian died after he was hit by a car while crossing Route 1 near Toys R Us just after 10 p.m. on Friday, March 3.
Kenneth Voropay, 63, of Trenton was struck by a driver who was heading southbound as he attempted to cross the center median between the southbound and northbound lanes. Voropay was transported to Capital Health Regional at Fuld for treatment. He died at the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The 41-year-old female driver from Lawrenceville was evaluated at the scene and refused medical treatment. The crash is still under investigation at this time by Lawrence Police Officer Robert Janoski, Det. David Burns and the Mercer County Prosecutors Office Serious Collision unit. Less than four hours later, the Lawrence Township Police Department received a call reporting that a car crashed into a tree on Route 1 south near Franklin Corner Road. The driver was trapped in the car and Lawrence Township Fire Companies 21, 22 and 23 were dispatched to extricate the driver from the vehicle.
Police administered CPR at the scene along with paramedics, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The driver was identified as Shaukat Bhatti, 54, of New Brunswick. The crash is still under investigation by Lawrence Police Officer Matthew
