New Jersey Department of Labor is now processing claims for extended unemployment benefits

According to officials at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the agency has begun notifying workers who have exhausted their state unemployment benefits of a 13-week extension they may be eligible for under the federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. 

These workers are being notified via email and text message that, if eligible, they will be able to certify for weekly benefits according to a schedule based on their Social Security numbers. Officials said the first group will be able to certify starting Sunday. This process will continue for several weeks. 

Once approved, claimants will be able to certify for any back weeks they are eligible for up to the week that ends March 28, and will be able to claim the additional $600 supplemental Pandemic Unemployment Compensation payment starting with the week that ended April 4. 

Officials said payments arrive about two business days after certifying. The supplemental payment arrives separately, several days later. 

“We have completed the modifications to allow our unemployment insurance systems to process these applications,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo in a written statement. “Many of these workers were unemployed before the pandemic began, and the current health crisis has obviously made their job search exponentially more difficult. We are pleased to able to now offer both extended benefits and the $600 weekly supplemental payment through the week of July 25 to help these workers through this difficult time.” 

Officials also said they made nearly 140,000 additional residents eligible for PUA, includes a large group of workers who had inadvertently suspended their benefits because of how they responded to federally mandated weekly certification questions.   

The New Jersey Department of Labor has been criticized for its inability to respond to calls from residents and for problems with its outdated computer system that processes claims. Officials allege that tens of thousands of residents per week are responding to one or more certification questions in a way that makes the claim ineligible for benefits under federal law. They say the errors cause residents to see a sudden halt in their benefit payments. A claims agent must then amend the claims to make benefits payable again.

      1. Hello was wondering if anybody out there waiting for the NJ (PEUC) 13 Week Extension has actually received their supposely (Text Message) from the NJDOL to start Certifying for benefits again and if so, how exactly is this processing for the (Back Pay Weeks, Extra Weekly $600 PUA, Etc) ?

        As on 5/20 I received a email from the NJDOL that my application was being reviewed by them for the (13 Week Emergency Ext Funds) and once it was approved I can start claiming the benefits but I still have not received this (Text Message) from them and today is now 1 week since I received that email from them.

        So if anybody else out there is also waiting for the 13 Week Ext Funds can you please tell me how long it took you to receive that text message from them to start certifying for benefits? Any help or info you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated!

        1. Same thing happening with me, I received the same email last week and today I claimed, still with zero balance. At this point don’t know what to do, should we wait for further details or that mean they did approve our applications? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks!

          1. Did u try to claim on your schedule time? Everyone has a schedule time even thru the phone, i took me a while get my money, but finally got it.

            1. I got the email to claim on June 1 when I tried to claim on my schedule time it said your certification cannot be processed call the re-employment center did any body else had the same problem??

              1. YES! I went through the same thing. I was told to certify today. There was a pre-questionnaire that I answered prior to being brought to the certification screen. Maybe that was answered incorrectly? Since I was off work, I’ve started again, so I indicated this. Did that delay my application again?

      1. I am trying to certify my claim more than 8 weeks. I am doing online, it’s come that I have to call to Reemployment call Center to talk to Agents to process my claim. I am calling everyday, nobody pick up my phone. I can see my claim status, it’s says Filed, weekly amounts, everything there. Except, I am not getting any money more than 8 weeks. I don’t know what to do. I did email them 7 times, still my problem is not solved. Thank you very much.

My unemployment ran out right before the pandemic but I was eligible for the extension so as of April 10 I’ve been calling in every week and it says the same thing you will receive credit for the week you have called in but it is not payable at this time so today I called In and after putting in my Social Security number and my four digit pin instead of saying it’s not payable at this time it’s saying you have to speak to a representative which we all know is impossible! Then I go online like I do every week when I claim and every week it states the day I called in and when my next payable week which would be the following week which means that my next payable week should be a week from today which is approximately June 5, 2020 but instead it’s saying that my next payable week is April 10, 2020 almost 2 months ago what’s going on!? I know they’re saying they’re doing updating on the site But I am afraid that somehow I’m getting screwed out of the money that I’ve been waiting for for almost 2 months it’s been a struggle for me and my family and I don’t know what I’m going to do if I don’t get this money

I researched and asked around and was told to email them I just started receiving my regular payments last week and back pay. I had the same situation,for 2 months I kept certifying but no money payable so I decided to send them a email and they fixed it the same week,I made a mistake when I answered one of the questions when certifying the first week,when a mistake is done they hold your money until you send them a email so they can make it payable,I didn’t know this but once I did it was fixed and all the money was deposited in my account,I also had to certify for previous weeks.i hope and pray you can resolve your issues.

  2. Fact is there isn’t anyone to speak to. My benefits stopped because I worked one day for a training and since then I haven’t received a check and all the system says is I’m getting credit for the weeks claimed and not payable and I need to speak to someone and to call back the next business day. It’s a shame that you can’t speak to anyone. I’m broke.. No food. No gas my kids looking at me like what are we going to eat. I’m borrowing money to feed my kids the he’ll with me eating. NJ should be ashamed of how they are handling unemployment

I’ve been try to get my claim approved since April first.cant get through to anyone either by phone or online.if you go online and answer one of their problems it sends you to a different part of the system that is useless they need more people personal to help with thousands of claims almost two months with no response.bills are piling up with no way to pay them new jerseyans need help with unemployment benefits even though all the monies retroactive but you still can’t get in contact with a person help fix the computer problem with your claim this unemployment system needs to be updated and needs to be helped as us new jerseyans need help also

    1. Information given by several representatives today suggest that no processing of extensions have started. Several sources from several FB NJ unemployment groups have stated this. In fact there seems to be no specific time they will start. I’ve seen these articles allow NJDOL to pacify the press and public. But the information here is simply not accurate. Please investigate. People are tired broke and suicidal. We need reporters like you to be our voice in this. Not to simply print want NJDOL states. PLEASE INVESTIGATE!!!

  7. The truth of the matter is that we all keep calling numbers that no one is even trying to answer. My family and I have been waiting for two months now and I am behind in everything. This is beyond ridiculous and I can’t even imagine continuing this for another two months. When they lift everything it’s going to be chaos everywhere. No one should have to wait this long, even people that owned businesses received money before that had existing claims on file. This is unbelievable and I hope everyone that has been waiting like myself get every dime they deserve. I guess we will be waiting together to see when people really start receiving extensions and regular unemployment.   8. I just received an email from NJ State Unemployment about the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC). I was laid off August 2019 and finished coding school into a pandemic. Terrible timing for everyone and myself. I hope people get their emails and have their claims approved! Stay Safe!

  13. i was certifying beginning of April and everytime my claim was not payable at this time till May 15 i got an email from NJDOL saying my claim is Payable now and to recertify all the week and i did and i got paid for all the weeks and i got the extra $600 as well

    1. Hello Barbara. Me as well. It will be 4 weeks tomorrow I haven’t seen my $600 weekly. I’m not sure what to do either. I started getting it every Monday via the state but it just randomly stopped. It’s suppose to go to July and now they’ve pushed it to January.   15. I have to say, this is absolutely disgraceful and NJ as a state should be ashamed of themselves. Their incompetence is baffling, finally started receiving my money this week after waiting 7 weeks. Finally let me claim all my weeks this last past Sunday and received all back pay Tuesday. Funny thing is it’s now Friday and have yet to receive any FPUA payments (Extra $600). Solved one problem just to arrive at another. NJ has the most expensive taxes as a state in the country and what do you get for it? Just to be ignored while people are desperately crying for help to feed their families. I wish I never moved to this state, they should be held accountable for this…. disgusting!

  16. You sit in Limbo waiting, hoping, praying to get any money owed to you. No one seems to care anymore about anything. No customer service exists anymore. People like the Govenor who have ALL the money they need, just throw promising words at you each day but that does nothing. The rich get richer and everyone else work their butts off and get nothing. You try to do the right thing BUT that doesn’t work these days. When you owe the gov’t or the state, you have to pay or suffer consequences. When they owe YOU, well La Di Da, good luck.     1. The same happened to me I was getting my $600 weekly and then they stopped for no reason. Nothing I did differently nor did my situation changed. I have heard other people say the same. There is definitely a glitch on the system

  18. Just certified for the eight week still no benefits. Very stressful and obviously an unforgettable experience. At the rate of our it moving along I would have gone back to work before receiving anything. Answered all the questions as per COV-19, but still no response only benefits not payable with a confirmation #. I am hoping that NJ will not have to shut down again because the system is unreliable.I have worked for a longtime and I am also a full time nursing student.

  19. I’ve been waiting since March 29th just received email this past week stating my case is now payable. I claimed Thursday as usual my claim status updated to last paid amount. And I haven’t received a dime yet. What days are you paid if you claim on a Thursday?

  20. On 3/29 I filed my claim and on 4/22 my claim went from pending to filed. I was able to certify for the weeks in April and I reported certain weeks with partial income. NJ UI paid me $80 for 2 consecutive weeks. On 5/11 and 5/18 I reported ZERO earnings from my employer because as of May 1st I have not been working until further notice. I was directed to answer additional questions, in which I did and submitted my answers. Each time it stated “not payable at this time”. Today 5/25 I attempted to certify and now I am unable to, it won’t allow me until I speak to a representative. As you are aware no one answers the calls. If no one answers the calls how will I be able to clarify what is happening to my claim? I am very concerned because if one does not certify, then that means I won’t get retro pay. Just like a lot of others I feel I hit a brick wall at a dead end street!

I’ve been getting my pua for the last few weeks on the same day every week Tuesday but it don’t get deposited until Wednesday, I didn’t see it on my portal today it usually be on my portal today and deposit Wednesday so what happen? Once again, as has been the case for two months, I have received a template response indicating that “if I am found ineligible for Unemployment, but eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)” that I “will also be eligible for the $600” weekly benefit “as of the week ending 4/4/2020”.

      3/13 was my last paid day of employment. I have not received a paycheck since. It is my understanding that due to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program which went into effect on 3/29, that I am eligible to receive $600 a week which equates to $4,800 through the week ending 5/22.

      Due to a lack of employment history, I was denied regular unemployment benefits dating back to the day I was furloughed, 3/13/2020. I began working in 09-2019 but have not accumulated a sufficient number of base weeks worked or wages in the base year ending 09/30/19 or 12/31/19.

      I am desperate. I try calling NJ Unemployment daily. I leave messages on the website daily. This is unacceptable and elected officials should have to answer.

  25. I received a generic email on 5/20 for the 13 week extension Stating that applications like mines should be able to certify starting this week. I waited for my social time today to only be directed to call a center where no one is still answering. This is hopeless.

  26. I’m located in Florida and for the past 4 weeks was receiving the $600.00 every tuesday morning. I haven’t received anything so far this week as of (May 27th 2:48pm). I have no idea if it is because of Memorial day or not? Can’t get through to the FL Connect system to talk to anyone.

      1. Some good news! Supposedly they will be paying the $600 biweekly. The DEO is aware of the missing $600 payment for the week of May 25th. Hang in there as The DEO will pay this week and last weeks PUA $600 benefit.

  27. ehsa, I also exhausted my UI benefits Feb. 22, 2020, my online status is FILED with $0 balance since my benes are exhausted, my date for SS# is 5/29 don’t think i’ll be getting a dime since I have zero balance. I too got the generic EMAIL 5/21 after I contacted them thru the DOL message center, saying supposedly I-We should be filing claims the week starting 5/24. Now if this doesn’t work out what the hell are we to do then! pretty sure unless I get a magic email contact to claim or a new balance money, this wont work out. they DOL have the money thru the Feds the problem is they are incompetent.

Joe, as far as I can tell for people with previous claims and $0 balance(exhausted benes) the UI dept. needs to replenish your account with the 13 weeks of extended monies, if not then when you do try to claim on your day youll get the Message contact the UI employment office which of course doesn’t pick up any calls at all. Also FYI I tried to contact UI Director Greg Castellani at 609-292-2460 ( constant busy signal) and no personal email he’s probably hiding until state paid early retirement, my day for filing is tomorrow Im sure if my balance is still at $0 it will be futile unless a miracle happens. They also say the updates for extensions will be based on your SS# so this could go on for many more months or to Fall based on the slow progress made by the States UI office, seems like Murphy says when asked why aren’t the UI employees not working longer hours to rectify it he said they have lives too and are Home schooling their kids with that time! Well welcome to the real world folks tax payers of NJ have been putting in long hours and overtime when needed for years trying to get ahead and stay afloat. I will post up any new progress when I get some.

      I myself did see a slight change on my claim today as upon checking my status this morning the claim now shows (Next Week Payable 4/4/20) which was not on there yesterday when I checked so, I am now assuming and hoping I may get that same (2nd Email/Text) from them anyday now for an update let’s see what happens!

  31. Hi Jack and Eshha, I am facing exactly the same situation, got an email for extension but today I claimed with zero balance again. Did not get any further text message. To my understanding, Zi think they are still working on the applications and want us to be patient. The only question is, if we don’t get further details and just wait how we would know that wait means yes or no to get the extension. Kindly anyone who was exactly in the same pain and later got the extended benefits, tell us the scenario what to expect.

Much to my surprise ive received a Email(no text) from NJ DOL stating Im able to collect PEUC 13 week extension UI and $600 per week Fed money and links to the instructions, Im to claim tomorrow 5/29 at my assigned time. My question is how much money will I get for my WBR would the rate be same as my previous rate at the time of my exhausted benefits in Feb. 2020? I cannot really find an answer to the rate I will getting I guess i’ll find out tomorrow, also via instructions I can claim back weeks to March 28 which would be maybe 9 weeks plus the $600 since the week of 4/4/20 about 8 weeks so in reality quite a chunk of money if I can claim all those weeks at once, hopefully theres no glitches during the claim process or im Sh*t out of luck. Good luck I’ll post my progress.

    1. My unemployment exhausted Feb 15 2020 I got email last Wednesday saying going thru application s. Blah blah and to wait to be approved and the. Trying to be able to certify for week of 5 /24. But haven’t heard anything since. Still at filed zero balance. My roommates even worse she tries to file claim April 4. Says it couldn’t be processed and it’s been sitting in system pending. We haven’t gotten a dime files for snap 2 months ago that’s also pending no money no food nothing no rent money 3 months what the heck are we supposed to do

  34. Quite frustrating but none of you should have certified until the 2nd email tells you to do so. YOu are wasting our time certifying just because you got that initial text.

  35. My husband got the 2nd email yesterday saying he could certify today for 13 week extension plus 600 week but when he tried to certify it took him to call the call center, saying that he went back to work which he hasn’t gone back to work and we can’t get ahold of anyone

Joe and everybody, I got a EMAIL notification on 5/28 at 5:45pm to claim my Extension 13 weeks on 5/29 Friday at my assigned time, I was nerve racked hoping I would not confront any glitchs or oops I answered wrong I claimed 8 weeks and hopefully get the 8 weeks Fed $600, received 8 EMAIL confirmations and today I received a EMAIL confirm the money from NJ UI will post my bank acct. in 2-3 business days and when it gets in the acct. another EMAIL will tell me its in. The Fed money should post on 5/3 Weds. as per instructions. FYI only claim when you get the EMAIL notification that spells out to claim on a certain date not before! Follow the emails instructions to the tee and everything should go well. I got a good chunk of money most of it will be for my monthly Healthcare insurance monthly till I can work again, the Fed money is for everything else, so be on the lookout the day/night before your claim day for a EMAIL from NJ DOL and everythings smooth, also make sure you have your last day of work date theres a few questions youll need to answer before actually claiming the benes, JUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS in the email.

      Thank you for the follow up here with your progress I appreciate it ok! ????????…..I received my 2nd Email from the DOL yesterday (With all the Link Instructions, Etc) to start to certify tomorrow (6/1 at 530pm) Although it should be all ready to go now, I still have a (0 Balance) in my claim not sure why that is but I guess I will find out tomorrow when I attempt to certify for benefits.

      Just was curious about something you mentioned yesterday here about making sure you have the (Last Day worked date) which is something I’am not 100% sure on remembering that exact date and I hope this will not put an error in the system for me.

      Anyway I heard there were alot of people who did not receive their PUA Money the Extra (600) this week so please update us on here whenever you do receive your funds this upcoming week if you were able to get that (600) too or not would appreciate it and Thanks again for the Help on here too ok!….Joe

      1. Joseph were you able to certify yesterday??? Because I got the second email on Saturday at 1:30 pm with instructions and date to start certifying on 6/1 at 9:30 but when I tried it said certification cannot be processed. I have a $$$ amount in my weekly benefit rate but have balance of $ 0.00 in remaining balance.

    2. Jack, what do you think happens if you answer the last date employed wrong? I believe that’s what I did, because it wouldn’t let me certify my benefits afterward. Told me to contact an agent.

  38. yes don’t certify till you get a email that’s has claim instructions and a definite claim date, usually the night before your SS# assigned day

    1. Hi Jack, I never received any email instructions for anything whatsoever but got my UI instructions w/ date of claim in my actual paper mail.

      So I went ahead and started certifying for my benefits on my assigned SS# date & time. Before that, there was a survey asking me if I qualify for PUA. I answered it and have been waiting for approval for more than a week but no news. I have been only receiving my weekly UI payment but I guess I have to be approved for PUA to get that $600 federal assistance payment? Feel confused and wonder if you could tell me if I’ve done anything wrong.

      1. Jen i would think you should have gotten a Email too about claim dates,although if you claim is new than on that blue letter should be a c!aim date. You also have to establish a online account with NJ unemployment too. Yes you do fjirst need the approval which is the letter? You my have.

        1. Hi Jack, Thanks for your reply. Yes this is my very first time filing for NJ UI benefits so I guess I received the blue letter instead of the email instruction. It had my claim date and all other instructions, and I have been receiving my UI payments fine. But still no news on my PUA (I again submitted that checkbox survey last week when I certified for this week’s benefits. My UI benefits is not enough, so I’m really anticipating that extra $600. If anyone in the comment section has a same issue or any idea what I should do, please let me know.
          I’m just gonna start with emailing the DOL inquiring about my PUS status. Hope they respond to emails at least.

  40. i have been receiving the 600$ PUA w my unemployment for about a month now and i didn’t get the 600 last week… i was told by people i know that they experienced the same thing but received double the following week.. well this week i got my unemployment and the 600 but not last weeks 600 ! and i need to address my claim date being inaccurate as well as my last date of work bc i should be owed 2 weeks or so of money and cannot get thru to the offices obviously. help!?

  41. I did a bi-weekly UE claim last week and my Cares Act money($600.00) payment did not come. I subsequently, certified this week for 2 weeks of unemployment, will my Cares Act money be 2 weeks also? ED.

  42. I have been receiving the 600 for the past 4 weeks. this week I forgot to certify on my scheduled time on Friday morning. I certified over the phone on Sunday and received my normal UE this morning but did not receive the extra 600 this week. Any thoughts?
