Winter storm warning update for Sunday evening, Jan. 31 (7:20 p.m.)

Updates for Sunday evening:

Gov. Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency. State offices are closed Monday, Feb. 1, and all non-weather related essential personnel are to stay home.

All six vaccine mega-sites across the state are closed on Monday.

NJ Transit has suspended all rail, light rail, and bus service for Monday except for the Atlantic City Rail Line, which will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Monday.

Princeton

All Princeton Public Schools will be remote only on Monday. In Princeton, recycling and trash pickups that were scheduled for Monday have been postponed. Trash is slated to be picked up on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Recycling is slated to be picked up on Saturday, Feb. 6. Municipal offices have been closed to the public since March due to the pandemic.

Because of the winter storm, Princeton University’s campus will be closed from at least 7 p.m. Sun., Jan. 31, until at least 5 p.m. Mon., Feb. 1, for non-essential personnel. Only employees in essential services roles should report to work on campus. The next update is expected by 3 p.m. on Monday.

Montgomery

Municipal offices in Montgomery are closed on Monday.

Virtual early dismissal for students in Montgomery Monday and Tuesday.

South Brunswick

All South Brunswick Public Schools will be closed on Monday. There will be no recycling or trash pickup in South Brunswick on Monday. Put trash and recycling out for Tuesday pickup instead.

Somerset County Services

In Somerset County, Meals on Wheels deliveries are suspended for Feb. 1 1, and clients are encouraged to use frozen and shelf-stable meals that were delivered earlier in the season. All Somerset County transportation services, including SCOOT, DASH, and CAT, are canceled for Feb. 1. Recycling service will have significant delays, and residents in areas scheduled for early this week are asked to leave their recycling at the curb until it can be picked up.

The National Weather Service in Mt. Holly has issued a winter storm warning that is in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday through 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Mercer, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, and Bucks counties are included in the storm warning area. Snow began in the region at about noon on Sunday.

Heavy snow is expected. Some areas could receive 16 to 22 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall coming on Monday. The latest National Weather Service forecast issued on Sunday afternoon predicts 12-18 inches of snow for the Princeton region. Wind gusts of 35 miles per hour are possible. Travel could be difficult or impossible.

Stay home if you can. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 5-1-1 for the latest information on state highway conditions.

Do not park your vehicles on public streets. Most municipalities need you to remove them so the streets can be plowed.

NJ Transit has cautioned that travelers should expect delays on trains and buses due to the storm.
