NJ Transit will offer early getaway service out of New York City for the Independence Day weekend
NJ Transit will offer early getaway rail and bus service for the holiday weekend beginning Friday, June 30.
Friday, June 30
NJ Transit rail, bus and light rail service will operate on a regular weekday schedule with the following additions:
From about 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., extra outbound trains departing from New York have been added to the NJ Transit schedule. Visit njtransit.com or see rail timetables for details.
Extra buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on more than two dozen bus routes starting around noon. Visit njtransit.com for details.
Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2
Rail
Rail service will operate on a regular weekend schedule.
Buses
Bus service will operate on regular weekend schedules.
Light Rail:
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule.
Newark Light Rail will operate on a regular Saturday and Sunday schedule.
The River LINE will operate on a Saturday and Sunday schedule.
Monday, July 3
Rail:
Rail service will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
Bus:
Bus service will operate on regular weekday schedules.
Light Rail:
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail, and the River LINE will all operate on a regular weekday schedule.
Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4
Rail:
Trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines. In addition, the Port Jervis Line Train 88 (4:05 p.m. from Port Jervis, 5:38 p.m. from Suffern, express to Secaucus and Hoboken) will operate.
Bus:
Northern and Central New Jersey bus routes will operate on a Saturday schedule. Southern New Jersey bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule. Customers are advised to check their timetables or visit njtransit.com for schedule information. NOTE: buses may be subject to detours and service delays for 4th of July events and parades through various towns. See njtransit.com for details.
Light Rail:
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule.
On July 4, for a portion of the day, HBLR will adjust the routes which normally travel through and serve Exchange Place by terminating one stop prior to the Exchange Place station. Service from Tonnelle Ave. and Hoboken will terminate at Harborside. Service from West Side Ave. and 8th St. will terminate at Essex St. See njtransit.com for times and more details.
The Newark Light Rail will operate on a Saturday schedule.
The River Line will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule.
Additional Weekend Shuttle Trains
NJ TRANSIT’s Summer Shore Service provides additional North Jersey Coast Line shuttle trains between Long Branch and Bay Head on weekends and holidays. The additional shuttle trains increase the weekend/holiday frequency to hourly from approximately 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Express Bus Service Philadelphia-Wildwood-Cape May
NJ TRANSIT Bus Route 316 has resumed daily seasonal summer service from Philadelphia to Wildwood and Cape May. This express bus also offers service to the Gloucester Premium Outlets in Blackwood.

NJ TRANSIT customers traveling from New York City to Long Branch and stations farther south on the North Jersey Coast Line can use a special promo code in the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App to save over 40% off regular fares through June 30. The code is limited to one use per customer per week and must include a destination of Long Branch or any station south of Long Branch on NJ TRANSIT’s North Jersey Coast Line.
