Mercer County Democratic Progressive Caucus endorses Andy Kim for U.S. Senate
The Mercer County Democratic Progressive Caucus has endorsed Congressman Andy Kim in the race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Bob Menendez.
Kim won the Sussex and Warren County conventions this past weekend but lost the Bergen County convention to First Lady Tammy Murphy Monday night. The Mercer County Democratic Convention is in six days.
“I am thrilled to be able to cast a vote for Andy at the Mercer Convention because he has been a great advocate for the issues I am most concerned about,” said Mercer County Democratic Progressive Caucus Vice Chair Beth Morgan. “As a senior citizen, I am concerned about the cost of healthcare – he’s been proactive on such things as capping insulin prices and reining in the cost of life-saving drugs.”
Morgan said as a progressive, she’s been concerned for years about the New Jersey “county line,” whereby party leaders choose who will get favorable placement on the ballot.
“Andy has come out against the unfair advantage this confers on certain candidates to the extent that he has even instigated a lawsuit against this practice,” Morgan said.
A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Kim supported and voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act, the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, and the Right to Contraception Act. In 2022, he voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act that allowed Medicare to negotiate down the cost of prescription drugs. The act capped insulin costs for seniors on Medicare at $35 per month and included Kim’s co-written bill capping prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare at $2,000 per year.
“I’m grateful to the Mercer County Democratic Progressive Caucus for endorsing me. I’m proud to have been a strong voice for progressive values in the House and look forward to taking that fight to the Senate,” Kim said.
