Former Trenton teacher and basketball coach charged with sexual assault
Former teacher and basketball coach Darrell Moody has been arrested for multiple counts of sexual assault that allegedly took place between 2014 and 2019 in Trenton.
In May 2024, a former student contacted the Trenton Police Department to report incidents of sexual assault that began when the person was just a fifth grader at Parker Elementary School in the city. Moody allegedly sexually assaulted the student over several years beginning in middle school and continuing to high school. Moody was also coaching basketball at Joyce Kilmer Middle School during that time.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit investigated the case. Detectives learned that in an unrelated incident, on June 27, 2023, the South Plainfield Police Department charged Moody with one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree solicitation of a minor for prostitution.
Moody, 51, who lives in Plainfield, was arrested in Trenton on Monday and charged with one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, one count of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact, two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion to detain Moody pending trial.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit at (609) 989-6568 or mcposvu@mercercounty.org.
