Many sections of D&R Canal State Park towpath closed due to damage from Tropical Storm Ida
The D&R Canal State Park sustained considerable damage from Tropical Storm Ida. Most of the park — including a large stretch of the towpath trail, boat launches, offices, and historic canal houses — is closed while officials continue to assess the damage. State officials are asking that you avoid most of the park, with the few exceptions noted below, until further notice for your safety.
In Lambertville, the canal bridge over the Alexauken Creek is closed. The bridge over the Wichecheoke Creek in Stockton is also closed. The pedestrian bridge at Demott Lane is packed with storm debis and is inaccessible.
The towpath is impassable in Lawrence Township near the Port Mercer Bridge Tenders House. Do not attempt to walk on the surface. Officials said the surface is unstable.
The D&R Canal towpath trail between Bridge Street in Lambertville and Trenton is open. The Bulls Island picnic area and playground are open.
Planet Princeton reader Debbie Cordonnier took the photos below of the towpath from Quaker Road to Alexander Road on Monday that show some of the storm damage and path erosion. The towpath has a lot of ruts in it and many stretches of the path are not safe for running.
