2015 Princeton Ironman Triathlon Cancelled

ironman princetonThe 2015 Princeton Ironman has been canceled due to difficulties getting the necessary approvals for the bike course from some Central New Jersey municipalites.

Even though the event was called the Princeton Ironman, the 2014 course route did not include Princeton. The event started and finished at Mercer County Park in West Windsor.

One of more than 60 events in the global Ironman series, the event included a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. The bike ride loop made its way from the park to rural Monmouth County. Roads were blocked off for the bike ride and many area residents complained about the delays.

Athletes were sent the following email a few days ago:

We regret to inform you that the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 Princeton triathlon will not take place this September. IRONMAN is responsible for securing a race course which meets the high standards of our brand and provides our athletes an unparalleled race experience. Race courses must also be approved by the local authorities. Unfortunately, after numerous attempts, we were not granted the necessary approvals for the bike course.

The inaugural Ironman 70.3 Princeton took place in September of 2014.

  1. The IM promoters require us to spend two days in the area since you must rack your bike the day before the race. I just cancelled my hotel room, and my family of four will not be buying food, merchandise, gas, etc. in your town and other shopping in your business district. Yeah, it would have been a hassle for a few hours while the race was going on, but most towns welcome IM for all the money it infuses into the local economy.
