Public Transit Information for the Holiday Weekend
Are you taking public transit to get away for the July 4th weekend? If so, here are links to schedules and some tips.
NJ Transit will offer extra “early getaway” service on Thursday, July 2, for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Independence Day holiday weekend. In addition, there are changes to service throughout the NJ Transit system that will take place through Sunday, July 5th.
On Friday, July 3, there will enhanced weekend/major holiday service on all lines, with extra peak-period trains on the Northeast Corridor.
On Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5, there will be regular weekend service.
Long lines are likely at ticket stations today. We recommend using the NJ Transit MyTix app to purchase your tickets. Private bus lines and the NY Waterway also have apps.
Joshua Crandall, the founder and CEO of the Clever Commute, recommends that people avoid NY Penn Station, Grand Central Station, and Port Authority between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. A surge of commuters is expected at that time. Take the PATH to Newark if you can instead.
Travel light if you can, because there will not be a lot a lot of space on trains and a lot of people will be carrying luggage.
