A tractor-trailer hit the traffic light pole at the intersection of Nassau Street and Washington Road just before 8 p.m. Thursday night and tore the pole out of the ground.

Witnesses saw the truck drive into the overhead traffic light and rip the light off. The pole then landed on top of the truck.

Traffic was backed up in the area die to the incident. As of 9:30 p.m., the southbound lane of Washington Road is closed near the intersection of Nassau Street. Repair trucks were on the scene shortly after the accident and the road was reopened at about midnight.
