Lawrence police arrest suspect in mail theft cases

Police in Lawrence have arrested a suspect they believe is responsible for several cases of mail theft in the township.

On Monday, July 17, Lawrence Township Police Detective Dean Sawasky was
conducting surveillance in the area of the U.S. Post Office on Brunswick Pike due to a recent uptick in mail theft incidents where mail was stolen from U.S. Post Office mailboxes in the area.

Just after 230 a.m., Sawasky observed a white SUV drop off a passenger along Brunswick Pike in front of the post office. The SUV driver then drove to a business parking lot nearby. The passenger of the vehicle who was dropped off in front of the post office was observed by Sawasky attempting to access the blue post office mailbox in the parking lot of the post office, police said.

Sawasky approached the suspect at the mailbox, and the suspect then fled on foot. Prior to the suspect fleeing, the suspect left evidence of the attempted burglary behind, police said. The evidence was recovered by police.

Police then approached the white SUV in the neighboring parking lot. Yefry Hernandez-Martinez, a 30-year-old from the Bronx, was arrested and charged with criminal attempt burglary. Hernandez-Martinez was released and issued a summons to appear in court.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding mail theft in Lawrence should
