Washington Road will be closed between Faculty Road and Route 1 for a week

Washington Road bridge

Contractors will complete work on the bridge over the D&R Canal in Princeton and West Windsor which requires Washington Road to be closed for about a week.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Washington Road will be closed between Faculty Road and Route 1 between 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 and noon on Friday, Oct. 18.

Detour routes will be posted.  Drivers traveling to or from Route 1 and Princeton should use Harrison Street and Alexander Road as alternate routes.

The D&R Canal Towpath will remain open most of the time but will be closed intermittently during the project.

Residents of Princeton University’s Meadows neighborhood will be able to access the apartments from Route One. Tiger Transit will continue to service the Meadows neighborhood with modified routes. The sidewalk from Faculty Road to Meadows Neighborhood on the north side of the bridge will remain open for pedestrians and bicycles.

The construction work is part of the $9.8 million bridge replacement project that began in July of 2023. For three months last year, Washington Road was closed for the project. Work continued after the new bridge was opened, but the speed limit was reduced. The bridge was last closed for two weeks in January so workers could install permanent bridge bearings.
