Expect overnight lane closures on I-295 in Ewing this week

Drivers traveling through Ewing should expect overnight delays this week as crews continue a highway paving project on I-295, New Jersey Department of Transportation officials said.

The work is part of a $5.9 million pavement preservation project along about 3.25 miles of I-295 between Lower Ferry Road and Route 29 in Mercer County.

What to expect this week

From Monday, May 4 through Wednesday, May 6, the right shoulder on I-295 southbound between Route 29 and Lower Ferry Road is scheduled to be closed overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for milling and paving.

Later in the week, more significant closures are planned on the northbound side.

On Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, the two right lanes on I-295 northbound between Lower Ferry Road and Route 29 will be closed overnight. The closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday into Friday, and from 8 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday.

At least one lane will remain open, and all exits will be accessible during the work, officials said.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and expect delays when traveling through the area.

Project details

The ongoing project includes milling and paving the highway in both directions, as well as work on ramps at Scotch Road and Bear Tavern Road.

Crews are using a paving method known as High Performance Thin Overlay, which incorporates recycled asphalt to create a smoother driving surface. The treatment is designed to improve ride quality, increase skid resistance, reduce noise, and extend the life of the roadway.

Electronic message boards will alert drivers to changing traffic patterns. Officials said the schedule could change depending on the weather or other factors.
